Caribbean culture celebrated at Oldham Library exhibition

OLDHAM Library – in conjunction with Oldham Local Studies and Archives – is hosting a display celebrating Oldham’s West Indian community as part of Black History Month.

The industrial revolution at the end of the 18th century and the development of the cotton spinning industry in Oldham during the 19th century resulted in a huge influx of people coming to the borough to satisfy the needs of the mills.

The development of transport links such as roads, canals, railways, ships, and planes enabled people to come from further afield.

As a result, new communities were formed and made Oldham the diverse place it is today.

The exhibition runs until October 31 at the Library which is open Monday – Thursday from 9am-8pm and Friday and Saturday from 9am-5pm.

In addition, there is a book available at the Library for the rest of the month so people can write their own experiences.

Oldham Coliseum Theatre runs a weekly women’s group and on Thursday, October 18 to celebrate Black History Month (10.30am-12noon) writer and group leader Najma Khalid will lead participants into a world of storytelling exploring where you live and who you are.

The friendly and social group aged 18+ takes your English speaking skills to a new level and it’s the place to make new friendships.  No experience necessary.
