Rotary go to the races to boost charity fund

MEMBERS of the Rotary Club of Crompton and Royton enjoyed a night at the races at a special event at The Park Inn Racecourse on Buckstones Road.

The punters arrived on time for the first race at 7.30pm, and many were so excited they arrived early!

A big thank you to Ossie and Betty Millar for producing and printing the programmes for the night as well as finding sponsors for all the horses.

Looking at the eight races, we were scratching our heads trying to choose which horses to back.

Would it be Flat Battery ridden by jockey Every Ready or Bitten Nails ridden by Cliff Hanger or Chicken Nugget ridden by Mac Donald?

Before each race we had to go to place our bets at the tote, which was run efficiently by Elaine and Liza Day, who did a fantastic job taking bets, counting the money and paying out the correct amounts to the winners.

Once everybody had placed their bets, the races began! There were some happy punters, some sad ones and some who did not win a single race!

After the excitement of five races we took a break for a really tasty meat and potato pie supper with all the trimmings. We then convened again for the last three races before the evening had to end.

A great time was had by all and as a bonus we raised £410 for our Rotary charity fund. We agreed we had to do it again soon.

A big thank you to Julia Wild and Mark Wood of the Park Inn for hosting the night and running the technology and commentary for the races.
