Shawside Juniors to kick off new football training sessions for girls

Even Manchester United have joined the growth explosion by introducing a side in the FA Women’s Championship.

It’s not only at the top level where interest has grown, with grass roots development also booming.

Now, an existing boys’ junior side, Shawside, is preparing to launch training sessions for girls aged six to 12 years.

They will be run by Under 12 boys’ manager, Daz Hughen helped by 16-year-old daughter Lauren.

Nearly a dozen youngsters have so far expressed an interest in the new sessions starting on Thursday, November 1 at Hollingworth Academy from 6-7pm.

“Initially, we are just looking to put on training sessions with the emphasis on fun and enjoyment,” explained Daz.

“They are designed to give girls a chance to just enjoy football.

“When Lauren was young she just relished being involved. She wasn’t a world beater but always wanted to have some involvement.

“And having her alongside me is good because she will help the girls who come along and perhaps don’t know anyone else or are not as confident.

“Then, over time, if we get enough numbers then of course we’d look at possibly setting up teams.”

All sessions will take place in the indoor hall at the Academy on Cornfield Street, Milnrow OL16 3DR.
