Still time to have say on Asda petrol station plans says inspector

PLANS for a petrol station at Asda, Shaw have gone out for a final consultation.

It will now be next year before a decision is made on the controversial scheme originally rejected by Oldham Council in September 2017.

An appeal against the refusal was held at Oldham Civic Centre last month in front of an independent planning inspector.

He has now extended the consultation period which ends on November 29.

A spokesperson for Oldham Council said: “The planning inspector requested we do further consultation and we are carrying out the request.

“The inspector will then decide whether to close the hearing or not based on any further comments received.

“We expect to hear after Christmas, based on recent appeal decision times.”

Previous objectors and supporters of the scheme have been contacted and asked if they want to add further comments.

The appeal was in support of change of use of land from car park to create a petrol filling station, erection of payment kiosk and associated lighting and CCTV works.

But it has been criticised by local councillors with Asda accused of “putting profit before people.”

In a previous statement they said: “Despite the recommendation of council highways officers that this development is unsafe, the strong objections of local residents in relation to traffic congestion as well as the concerns of residents, Asda’s immediate neighbours, living directly opposite the proposed site, whose right to a peaceful life will undoubtedly be disrupted by a petrol station literally on the doorstep of the terraced houses, this has failed to register with Asda management.”

If successful, the supermarket would lose 35 car parking spaces, bringing it down from 316 to 281.

The original application also proposed a 24-hour operation, seven days per week. But proposed opening times were then changed to Monday to Saturday from 7am to 11pm each day, and Sunday and Bank/Public Holidays from 10am to 6pm each day.

The petrol station will be located to the left of the access on Greenfield Lane.

The planning application can be seen on Oldham Council’s website using reference PA/339852/17.
