A ST George’s Day celebration will be hosted in Shaw town centre next month after a community organisation’s successful funding bid.
And applying for a £500 grant proved far less tricky for the Shaw and Crompton Events Group than fighting any fire breathing dragon.
They are one of 22 groups in Oldham selected as recipients of the fourth annual Rapid ROCA (Respect our Communities Awards) event in conjunction with First Choice Homes.
They money will be used to organise St George’s Day festivities at Shaw Royal British Legion on Saturday, April 21 – albeit 48 hours ahead of the official patron saint of England’s day.
More than 40 shops and businesses will be decorated with England flags.
“Last year an event was held in Dunwood Park,” explained S&CEG secretary, Sue Hall.
“We were lucky with the weather and it was held outdoors. Lots of people came and it showed off the best of Dunwood Park.
“Everyone was asking if it was going to happen again but we wanted it to be more central and open up the town centre.”
The 2018 event will be full of stalls and entertainment, including dragon-themed games for youngsters.
“We are grateful for Rapid Roca for the money,” added Sue. “They have been very generous to us giving it two years on the run.”
Despite the grant, the group is still looking for a volunteer or volunteers to help put up the flags. Anyone interested should email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Joanne White, First Choice Homes Oldham, Stronger Communities team member and event organiser said: “The panel had the challenge of looking at a wide range of community based activities and were delighted to be able to allocate funding to the successful groups.
“These small cash grants will make a huge difference for the people in Oldham who will benefit from such an interesting and wide range of activities that will improve the communities and lives of all involved.”
