Chain reaction – John replaces Jack as president of Oldham Metro Rotary Club

“A wonderful 12 months,” is how Jack Wild described his year as president of Oldham Metro Rotary Club.

Oldham Metro President Jack Wild hands over to successor for 2019-2020, John Cockcroft

Jack’s term of office ended on July 9 when he passed on the chains to John Cockcroft at the club’s assembly and handover meeting at Crompton and Royton golf club.

“It’s been great to engage with the community,” said Jack.

“We have raised lots of money topped off by the Saddleworth Show which was a sensation while Wellifest – in only our second year – was a success as well.

“We supported many charities throughout Oldham and the Choral Speaking competition was memorable with 2,200 children taking part from 26 schools.

“We have had a few downs but largely all ups and it’s been a memorable 12 months for me.
“I would like to have recruited more members which was one of my targets.

“However, we have gained what we call our ‘Friends of Rotary’.

“They are people who can’t necessarily commit because of work commitments to full-time membership. But they are more than happy to join in when they can and help the community.”

Brought up in Stalybridge and now living in Littleborough, new president John stepped up from his vice-president role. He has been a Rotarian for just over a decade.

He said, “I previously worked in Bangladesh for more than 10 years which often meant spending 120 days out there at a time.

“I never knew when I was going to be asked to go so I could only attend Rotary meetings every so often.

“But it is an honour to become President. Like Jack, I am keen to introduce more members to the club but it’s also building on the work we already do and finding other areas and groups in Oldham we can help.”

• Oldham Metro Rotary Club is a club of about 35 male and female members who come from a wide range of professions and occupations, though some of them are now retired.

Their meetings are held on Tuesday evenings at Royton and Crompton Golf Club and include Club business as well as guest speakers.
