Christmas came early to primary school with ‘good’ Ofsted rating

ST Aidan and Oswald’s RC Primary School had ‘good’ reason for celebrations as Christmas approached.

Following an inspection by Ofsted on October 8-9, the Roman Road school “continues to be a good school”.

Ss Aidan and Oswald’s was previously inspected on May 12, 2015 when it was judged to be good with outstanding features.

This latest report said the school “has a place at the heart of the Royton community.

It also stated: “The school’s ethos runs through everything that staff do.

“Staff go out of their way to make each day special for the children. Staff also, through their lessons, help pupils o see that other people are special too.”

Lead inspector Allan Torr noted: “I stood and watched Year 5 pupils line up very well.

“They braved he rain downpours on their way to swimming lessons. There was no fuss, no undue noise and no larking about.

“This behaviour matched how well pupils behave in lessons. They are keen and want to contribute.

“In the surveys, most pupils, parents and staff said that behaviour is good. There are very few instances of bullying or name-calling.”

In terms of ‘what does it need to do better’ Ofsted noted: “Leaders and governors know reading is the main subject that needs to improve.

“Governors have agreed to fund the new library, new reading scheme and new books.”

The school has since had more to celebrate: after hosting a successful Christmas Fair enjoyed by the school and parish community.

The fair was opened by the Deputy Mayor Cllr Jenny Harrison, who then met the children parents and parishioners enjoying the activities, stalls and raffles.

Organised by the school’s dynamic Parent Teachers’ Association, £1,265 was raised for pupils who attend the school to support the wide range of curriculum experiences enjoyed by the pupils.

Mr Damian Harrison (Headteacher) said: ‘The success of the Ofsted inspection is testimony to the hard work of the staff and it’s wonderful for their efforts to be recognised.

“The children’s behaviour and attitudes are also superb.

“Put this together with the commitment and support of our parents, as demonstrated with the fantastic Christmas Fair, and you can see why I count myself as blessed to be the headteacher of such a brilliant school.”
