Council seeking answers to missing ‘and’ from new medical centre

SHAW and Crompton Town Council is to try and find out why the word ‘and’ is missing from the area’s new medical centre.

The facility, on Westway, will see The Village and Oak Gables Partnerships move in – the latter after 51 years at Crompton Health Centre, on High Street – on Monday, July 22.

But the missing three letters have been the source of complaints from people living in the area.

Now the area’s council is to ask why there is no and.

‘Shaw Crompton health centre’

Chief officer Tony Hilton told the meeting on Tuesday, June 25: “It’s been brought to our attention by a few people that they believe it’s called Shaw Crompton Medical Centre, not Shaw and Crompton Medical Centre.

“And it would appear a number of local people are not happy with that, that the ‘and’ or a sign is missing.

“I don’t know whether there’s any scope to having the word ‘and’ inserted.

“Former Councillor Mike Dodd, who’s part of the patient participation group, is trying to have conversations with whoever may have been involved in the discussion regarding the name.”

Chair of the council, Cllr Lee Navesey, added: “I think we could write to them and ask how the decision was come to from our point of view as a town council because we’ve had objections from residents – and not just one.

“I propose we write to them over how that decision was made and who by?

“If we can get to the source of who’s named it, at least then when residents come to us and ask why, we can say, ‘This is the reason why.’

“If it’s a private decision, there’s nothing you can do. If we try and ascertain how the decision was come to and who by and if there’s any scope?”

The Shaw Crompton Medical Centre, which stands opposite Crompton Library, was billed by health bosses as a chance to ‘improve our services and efficiencies for all our patients.’

Documents supporting it state: “It will deliver a suite of consultation and treatment rooms for traditional appointments and there will be a group meeting room to facilitate new activities for patient support and education.

“Training staff for the future will also be a core function of this facility, and the new building will enable each practice to offer quality training.”

But Councillor Marc Hince told the meeting: “It isn’t a great start, is it? Missing ‘and’ off.

“Shaw Crompton doesn’t make sense, does it? It should either be Shaw or Crompton or Shaw and Crompton.”
