A DEDICATED Rotary Club is working hard to make sure children do not miss out on festive cheer from Father Christmas this winter.
Since 1965 the Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs of Crompton and Royton have taken Father Christmas on a two-week tour of the district in December.
In a special float, they travel a different route every evening to bring some Christmas cheer and meet the local children.
This year the tour cannot go ahead in the usual way because of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown.
But determined to make sure children still get the chance to meet Father Christmas, the Rotary Club and Inner Wheel have organised an online event instead.
Rotarian Andy Czakow explained: “Coronavirus means we are not going to be able to do our usual tour.
“But are we down hearted? No. Have we abandoned Father Christmas? No. Will the children get to see Father Christmas. Yes!
“We have devised a scheme through our Facebook page where a booking system allows parents to arrange a private meeting for their children with Father Christmas using Zoom.
“Children will be able to see him and have a chat online.
“We will all miss our usual tour but you have to find different ways of doing things and we were determined the children wouldn’t miss out on an event we all enjoy.”
There will be 340 10-minute online appointments for children to talk to Father Christmas between December 1-18.
All children need to have an adult with them at the meeting. There will be no charge to see Father Christmas. To find out more and make a booking, go to the Facebook page.
Donations can be made on the Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/andrzej-czakow-2. All monies raised will be used to support local community causes.
The Club is also planning for Father Christmas to talk to children in the Children’s Ward of Royal Oldham Hospital on Christmas Eve.
