SHAW Cricket Club has reprimanded a former member who had a rant on social media about them being placed in the third tier of the new Greater Manchester Cricket League.
“Our chairman (David Andrew) has told the member he was out of order and, if he has a grievance, he should not air it on social media,” explained club treasurer Paul Harrison.
Mr Harrison added the comments are not representative of the views of the club and the former member has apologised for his post.
“We have nipped it in the bud. It has been clarified and little more than a storm in a teacup,” he continued.
Shaw have been placed in division 2A alongside the first teams from Droylsden, East Lancashire Paper Mill, Elton, Elton Vale, Littleborough Lakeside, Micklehurst, Shaw, Werneth and Westleigh along with second teams from Clifton, Glossop and Prestwich.
Mr Harrison said: “We are perfectly happy with the league we are in. The first season will be about seeing if we are at the right level.
“I am sure we will be as good as some teams while there will be a number who are better than ourselves and also ones who are worse.”
Following the demise of the Pennine League after only two years – Shaw had been happy in the set up that was a merger of the CLL and Saddleworth League – and would have been happy for it to remain.
Mr Harrison said: “I thought the Pennine League worked well for ourselves and other ex-Saddleworth League clubs and we were disappointed when it folded.
“I would put it down to big former CLL clubs like Norden and Littleborough thinking above themselves and sticking up their noses at us. They didn’t want to play at little Saddleworth League grounds, though clubs had bettered themselves.
“We invested in a new scoreboard and spent money on the ground.
“We also had no complaints about the standard of cricket that was competitive.
“The Greater Manchester League was the best option for us and a no brainer as we wouldn’t be good enough to play in the Lancashire League.”
