Grapple with a weekend of wrestling to help local academy

IT is being billed as the ‘Championship Weekend’ of wrestling at two venues in Oldham.

Oldham St Annes Rugby Club is to host a show on Friday, March 25 and Royton Band Club the next evening (March 26).

They will feature a range of wrestlers from locals to internationals with four from Finland attending,

And proceeds raised from the two events will help meet the running costs of the Squared Circle Wrestling Academy in Hollinwood which has struggled over the last couple of years.

The academy is run by former professional wrestler Marty Jones who explained: “It has been a tough time and the pandemic got the better of us, but now we’re back up and running it’s time to have a good time and do what we do well.

“The academy keeps kids off the streets, and they love it. Anyone is welcome, from beginner to experienced, the doors are always open.

“Come along and support your local wrestlers and superstars.”

Marty made his wrestling debut in 1972 when he was just 16.

He won his first championship in 1976 when he defeated ‘Rollerball’ Mark Rocco for the British light-heavyweight championship.

He continues to support his hometown by training up-coming wrestlers.
