Oldham Juniors ‘Tri’ their best

THE second Oldham Junior Triathlon took place at Failsworth Sports Centre on Saturday, July 7 with a record 104 children taking part – 84 more than last year.

In race one, youngsters aged eight to 10 swam 50m, cycled 800m and ran 400m.

Those aged 11 to 14 swam 200m, cycled 2,000m and ran 1,200m in race two.

Emily Hyder was the first female and Theo Nuttall the top male in the eight to 10 years’ event, while Lois Davis and Joshua Doherty were the winners in the 11 to 14 years.

A crowd of more than 200 spectators came along to cheer the children on during the activities, creating a fantastic atmosphere.

“The Failsworth Junior Triathlon is a great way to encourage youngsters to get active, as it comprises sporting disciplines they’re likely to already be familiar with,” said Paul Thewlis, general manager of Failsworth Sports Centre.

“The support and feedback for this event has been amazing and the best part has been seeing children just having a try and experiencing a junior triathlon,” added Kelly Tattersall, community and partnership development officer at OCL.

OCL received hugely positive feedback from parents and children.

Natalie Taylor said: “A brilliant day, my boys and their friends loved it.”

Mum to two competitors Sharon McCormick added: “My two loved it, very friendly and well-organised event.”
