Roughyeds waiting for Johnson

FULL-BACK Kyran Johnson is keeping Oldham boss Scott Naylor waiting on his team-selection plans ahead of Sunday’s clash with Coventry Bears at the Vestacare Stadium (3pm kick-off).

The former Featherstone Rovers man picked up a shoulder injury in the defeat at Newcastle Thunder last time out and he is still having treatment.

He didn’t train on Tuesday night but Naylor is optimistic about his chances of proving his fitness in time for weekend.

“He should be okay, but we’ll look at him and assess him on Thursday night,” said Naylor, who reported that Johnson was his only concern.

He confirmed, however, that he would be making changes following the Newcastle defeat in which Roughyeds led 18-6 until the last quarter of an hour when they fell apart.

Thunder stepped up the pace, threw caution to the wind and scored three converted tries in the last few minutes — two of them by pacy full-back Theerapol Ritson — to win 24-18.

Naylor’s squad was given last week off to recharge their batteries ahead of their last four games of the regular season against Coventry, York, Bradford and London Skolars.

Naylor has since paid tribute to the work of ORSA (Oldham Roughyeds Supporters Association) which funded a bonding session in a local restaurant after training on Tuesday.

Young fans who took part in the competition to colour-in an outline of club mascot Roary are reminded than entries should be returned to the club at Sunday’s game.

The deadline is next Wednesday, September 5, and each entry must include name, age and contact number.
