The town’s branch of the Royal British Legion is putting on a day of celebration for Armed Forces Day on Saturday, June 29.
The Railway Hotel will be the scene of the events from 1pm until 7pm and there is definitely no shortage of entertainment.
For 15 local artist and bands will be performing over the day and there will be other forms of entertainment. Admission is free to everyone.
Royton’s RBL was out in force as members teamed up with their comrades in Rochdale to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday, June 6.
There tributes were paid to the servicemen that helped do so much for the effort in winning World War II for the Allies.
Dignitaries at the special service included members of the armed forces community, Mayor of Rochdale Councillor Billy Sheerin and council leader Allen Brett.
The generations were spanned, with veterans and local school children laying special wreaths to mark the occasion and pay tribute to the fallen.
Pupils from Oulder Hill Community School read the famous ‘Poem Normandy’ by Cyril Crain, before a poignant rendition of the Last Post was played.
Moving speeches were made by Councillor Sheerin, Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for the armed forces, and the Rev Margaret Smith, Rochdale town centre chaplain.
Cllr Emsley said: “The service showed our borough at its very best, as communities came together to pay their respect and remember the fallen. We will never forget those who lost their lives on the beaches of Normandy, fighting for the freedoms and liberty we enjoy today.
“Their courage and sacrifice live on through today’s generations. I was proud to be at this special service and, in the words of the moving Normandy poem, we stand in memory and remember them with pride. Lest we forget.”
