Runners enjoy Park life experience

FINALLY, and with a few false starts, Royton Road Runners began their 2020/21 club season as 31 members took part in the Heaton Park 10K (writes Gary Smith).

Rob James was quickly into his stride after all the twists and turns of the lockdown rules for training and participation in organised races.

James finished fourth overall with a time of 35 minutes 50 seconds as Blackburn Harrier Ben Fish took top spot in 32 mins 44 secs. James Henderson was 15th in 39:26.

Heather Semple was first female finisher in 42:43 with Janet Jobey Royton’s top lady finisher in 46:21.

Despite lockdown frustration club members kept in touch with regular online socials organised by social secretary, Martina Naismith.

There was also a virtual ‘Run Around the World’ starting from Oldham, thought up by vice-chairman David Emanuel and monitored by our club statistician, Jill Hickson.

Additionally, a ‘Dawn to Dusk’ runathon was organised by club captain, Carl O’Callaghan.

And, thanks to Jarrod Gritt, no one missed their gym sessions as he streamed 70 plus workouts over lockdowns one and two with just a few days recovery allowed between sessions.

Members continued their training and running on their own, and when allowed, in pairs and small groups. New members are always welcome.
