Santa to sleigh back into Shaw for traditional Rotary celebrations and collection

SEEING Santa arrive in your street has been a tradition for generations of youngsters who have grown up in Royton and Shaw.

First you hear the loud festive music, and then bright lights fill the street as a large sleigh on wheels arrives.

The festive guy’s little helpers then rush around to knock on people’s doors and collect donations – all for a good cause.

The annual tour is organised by the Rotary Club of Crompton & Royton, who this year are joining forces with The Inner Wheel Club of Crompton & Royton to continue the tradition.

The cash collected is used to support local charities.

Below is the timetable of when Santa will be reaching your street (please note, circumstances can change and so some of the routes could be subject to change at short notice).

The sleigh sets off from 6.30pm to 8.30pm each night, from Friday, December 1 to Friday, December 8.

Santa will also be at Elk Mill Shopping Centre on Saturday 2, Sunday 3, and Saturday 9 December outside ASDA HOME.

The collection dates and times are:

  • Friday 1 December: Grassmere
  • Saturday 2 December: Elk Mill (Outside ASDA Home)
  • Sunday 3 December: Elk Mill (Outside ASDA Home)
  • Monday 4 December: Netherhouse
  • Tuesday 5 December: Thorpe Farm
  • Wednesday 6 December: Rushcroft

Andy Czakow, Club president, said: “The collection is not just about the money but to raise our profile in the community and see the joy Father Christmas brings to young and old alike.

“On parts of our collection route whole family groups and neighbours of all ages gather to meet us.”

Rotary Club of Crompton and Royton was founded in 1956. It is a friendly club of approximately 30 members, currently headed by president Andy Czakow.

Locally, they carry out community work and also support a range of local and international charities and projects, and also have an active social calendar.

They meet at the Puckersley Inn every Wednesday lunchtime from 12.30-2pm, and their meetings include a range of interesting speakers.
