St Mary’s send funds Down Under

ANIMAL-LOVING pupils at a High Crompton school are sending £925 to help wildlife caught up in the Australian bush fires after a successful fundraising event.

Youngsters at St Mary’s C of E Primary on Rushcroft Road have been moved by the tragedy which has unfolded Down Under since September.

It is estimated as many as one billion creatures have perished in the infernos, which also claimed the lives of at least 24 people.

So, pupils decided to do their bit to help by hosting a cake sale with parents, with baked treats on sale for 50p each, and having a non-uniform day, with a donation of £1 per pupil.

There were also some great individual efforts including one pupil who created a poster about the fires to bring awareness to the classroom.

And two pupils made 24 cakes and sold them on their avenue to raise £27.

All the money raised will go to Wildlife Warriors, which is a charity based at the Australia Zoo and was set up in 2002 by Steve and Terri Irwin.

A spokesperson for the school said: “We had been talking at school about the devastation caused by the fires.

“A group of parents then approached the school to ask if pupils could do something to raise money to support Wildlife Warriors.”
