Birthday bash for young at heart over 60s group

A THRIVING over 60s club has enjoyed a double celebration to mark its fifth birthday and annual volunteers’ week.

Five founder members of the Royton Over 60s were among guests at the festivities hosted at Dovetales Christian Church, Beal Lane, Shaw.

“The club has grown tremendously,” explained club founder Janet Heap.

“We started off with six ladies and we are now up to 40. Our youngest member is 63 and oldest 93.
“As it was volunteers’ week it was the perfect opportunity to thank people for their help and present them with a gift as a mark of our appreciation.

“Without them we couldn’t function effectively as a group.”

The friendly club meets every Thursday from 1pm-3pm and offers a wide range of activities, including craft making.

“We do a lot of crafting,” explained Janet. “People love to take something home.

“So, we do jewellery and cards making, we paint and last year everyone made memory books from old photographs.”

The club has had several homes but is now happily settled at Dovetales run by Janet and husband Bill.

“It is a convenient location,” said Janet. “We have had a deaf loop system put in and there are wheelchair ramps, front and back, so we are fully accessible.”

The afternoon celebration included a talk on the work Dovetales have been involved with in Romania, Moldova and India since the charity started 29 years ago.
