GOLFERS from Crompton and Royton braved the wintery weather to contest the Eddie Hopkinson Boxing Day Salver.
It is an annual event in memory of Eddie, the former Bolton Wanderers and England goalkeeper.
While the Eddie Hopkinson Memorial, a major is contested in the summer, the salver is regarded as an “unofficial major” according to club professional Martin Beaty.
And this year’s event could not have been any closer as the top two spots were determined through a card play-off.
Winning on countback was Martyn Buckley with 33 points in the singles Stableford, the same total as runner-up Paul Winchester.
In third place with 32 points was James Booth.
The prizes were presented by Eddie’s son Paul, himself a former professional footballer.
The other winner was charity as the event raised £200 for Guide Dogs UK.
