Latics fan Michael lands his dream job as head of media

ROYTON’S Michael Brown admitted it has been a “whirlwind” start after being appointed Oldham Athletic’s new head of media and communications.

“I joined the club in the same week as Paul Scholes was named manager which put the spotlight on the club,” said the 26-year-old.

“It was a good time to join as I met more media in my first fortnight than I had done in the whole of my career.”

And it was a dream job for Michael who has been following the fortunes of the Boundary Park club from being a boy.

“It’s a job that ticks every box as I live two minutes from the ground and I have watched them since I was seven years of age while a lot of my mates follow them home and away,” he added.

Michael is a former pupil at Byron Street Infants, High Barn Juniors, Royton and Crompton School and Oldham Sixth Form College.

He gained a degree in football business and media at UCFB, which was run from Burnley Football Club.

After initially volunteering at Ashton United, Michael spent three years at the Manchester County FA where he worked in media and marketing.

Michael, keen to work for a football club, joined National League North club Southport in the summer of 2018 in a similar role to the one he has at Boundary Park.

And after eight months with the Sandgrounders came a move to Latics.

He said: “I wanted to get into a football club and enjoyed my time at Southport.

“I have always had a close connection with Latics as I was only about seven years of age when my dad took me to my first game.”
