RUNNERS have reacted with surprise and anger after organisers of the Milltown Races reduced the 2018 series by 50 per cent.
After four races in 2017, the Milltown calendar for 2018 shows just the Saddleworth Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, April 22 and then the Oldham Half Marathon on Sunday, October 28.
Dropped from the series are the popular 7K and 10K road races.
No reason has been given for the changes by organisers Oldham Community Leisure.
Social media users were quick to express their disappointment.
Glynn Billington wrote: “The end is nigh.”
Pete Williams added: “Don’t you want local runners anymore? Dropping the 7k and 10k and moving the half to the weekend of Snowdon marathon!
“You can tell you’re not runners organising these races!”
The Saddleworth Sprint Triathlon is back for a fourth year starting from Saddleworth Leisure Centre, Uppermill.
Entry costs £45 and anyone not affiliated to Triathlon England must pay extra for insurance to compete in the swim, cycle, run event.
The Oldham Half Marathon is described as one of the toughest races of its kind and returns in 2018 for a sixth time. Entry costs £25 and places are limited to 600.
