Plans submitted to convert former Shaw pub into emergency homeless accommodation

A PLANNING application has been submitted to Oldham Council seeking to convert the former Weavers Answer public house on Milnrow Road, Shaw into an 18-room, temporary homeless hostel.

More than 100 comments about the proposals have already been logged on the local authority’s planning portal with all but two against the development.

The application, on behalf of Nelson based CarePoint HC, will be heard by Shaw and Crompton Parish Council’s planning committee on January 26 and go before OMBC’s planning committee at an unconfirmed later date.

Confirming plans for 18 one-bedroom units, it also states there will be no significant element of care provided at the accommodation which is proposed to have three full-time staff and one part time staff.

The application also says work started at the building on November 9, 2020.

Howard Sykes OBE, Liberal Democrat Councillor for the Shaw Ward, said: “Upon being told an application had been submitted, in early December 2020, we asked that this application be considered by a meeting of the full Planning Committee, rather than just planning officers.

“The public consultation with neighbours has been limited to only seven addresses, as is required by planning law.

“But our actions will ensure that all residents can still make their views known and these will be considered as late as the day of the meeting of the Planning Committee,” he added.

“Once we became aware of the initial unauthorised works we ensured action was taken to address this.”
