A PLETHORA of eye catching poppies has sprung up in Shaw town centre and won’t wilt any time soon come rain or shine.
The oversized blooms are the work of Shaw and Crompton Events Group and have appeared to public appreciation in recent weeks.
The weatherproof poppies have been attached to lampposts at various points throughout the town to help mark the end of the First World War.
And they will remain in place until after Remembrance Sunday on November 11.
The Events Group took their lead from a similar idea in Rochdale but what started as a germ of an idea blossomed into a bigger project.
Sue Banks, from S and C Events Group, said: “The idea was to put up the poppies on Memorial Walk as a commemoration to the War Memorial that stands in the gardens.
“However, once we had obtained permission from OMBC’s street lighting department it all escalated.
“We ended up buying 80 of these poppies and volunteers from the Group went out with the ladders in the wettest weather seen for months to put them up around the extended Town Centre.
“Public feedback has been excellent with lots of smiley faces on the street.”
Fundraising in the last few months has financed the purchase of the poppies, with the remainder going towards the Christmas Lights switch-on set for Saturday, December 1.
