Residents ‘get together’ to commemorate life of Jo Cox

TWO Royton community groups are joining in the National weekend of events to commemorate the third anniversary of politician Jo Cox’s murder.

The ‘Great Get Together’ events will include street parties, picnics, barbeques and bake-off competitions,

The initiative aims to celebrate what communities hold in common rather than focusing on issues which divides them.

First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) donated 17 grants worth £1,655 to help stage these events as part of its drive to bring communities together.

Throstle Court on Middleton Road, an older people’s housing development, is hosting a garden party on Friday, June 21.

They will be inviting residents, other people from the community plus members of St Paul’s Ladies Society and the local church.

The Holly Estate Tenants and Residents Group, also Royton, is also hosting an event in their popular community garden.

They will be bringing people together over games, Karaoke and food on Sunday, June 23.

Vinny Roche, Chief Executive of First Choice Homes Oldham, said: “Bringing people together in our communities is an important part of what we aim to do.

“Embracing diversity but also celebrating what different communities have in common is something we really want to support.

“We have provided some funding awards through our Rapid ROCA grant scheme to the Oldham community so that they can look to host something truly wonderful that brings neighbours – new and old – together over some cake and a cup of tea, or a joint activity.
