OLDHAM Choral Society will perform works by Howard Goodall and Puccini at St Paul’s Church next month.
The Royton church will provide the setting for an afternoon of choral music on Sunday, November 1.
The concert, starting at 4pm, will feature Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light and Giacomo Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, bringing together a contemporary take on the Requiem tradition and the dramatic melodies of a composer renowned for his operas.
Eternal Light is a moving modern Requiem which combines words from the Latin Mass with English poetry, while Messa di Gloria was written by Puccini when he was just 18.
The latter is filled with beautiful, dramatic melodies that foreshadow the operatic works which would later establish Puccini as one of the great composers of his era.

David Cane, Oldham Choral Society’s musical director, will conduct the performance, joined by tenor soloist Brian McNamee and baritone soloist Andrew Wickens.
A string ensemble will accompany the singers, with Gary Hulme playing the organ and Duncan Robertson on piano.
The concert offers an opportunity for local audiences to enjoy both works at the Church Street venue.
Tickets cost £15, with a reduced price of £5 available for students and those receiving Universal Credit or Pension Credit. Under-18s can attend for just £1.
They are available online at www.oldhamchoralsociety.org.uk, by calling the ticket secretary on 07768 167178, or on the door.
