Santa calls for support for Children’s Unit at Royal Oldham Hospital

SHAW AND Crompton’s new town crier Marcus Emms will be leading a double life as the end of year approaches.

However, his only concern is remembering to dress in the right costume for the right event.

So far he’s only donned his Town Crier regalia to attend a variety of events including the moving but rewarding HOPEWalk, the crowning of Holy Trinity’s new harvest queen Cizka Corny, and a visit to the Royal Oldham Hospital.

And the latter visit is prelude to him swopping his bell, hat and clogs for a Santa Claus costume.

Marcus, who took on his Town Crier duties last June, has now agreed to take on the role of the hospital’s Father Christmas in December.

He’s already busy helping to raise £300 to buy presents for youngsters who will be in hospital over the festive period. Shaw-based Cornerstone Estates and Lettings were one of the first businesses to contribute.

“I have done Santa for years and been all over the place but I have never been Santa at the Royal Oldham,” explained Marcus.

“It is not going to be easy for the kids being in hospital over Christmas so I am helping to ensure they have the best time possible.

“I’m calling in a few favours from people who always said ‘if you need anything just let us know’.

“We want to buy gifts, decorations, sweets; all things kids like.

“But we also want artists and acts who can spare some time to go in and entertain the children. It might be they are a magician or a singer; anyone who can make them smile.”
