Shaw and Crompton has new Town Crier

OYEZ, Oyez, Oyez – Shaw and Crompton has a new town crier.

“Anything for a hat,” joked incumbent Marcus Emms after a successful ‘interview’ at the July meeting of Shaw and Crompton Parish Council.

Marcus succeeds Andrew Powell, who can now finally pass on his bell and uniform.

He recently came out of retirement for the Family Fun Weekend and annual civic service after deciding to stand down earlier this year.

”I wish Marcus well and I hope he enjoys the next 30 years,” said Andrew as both men addressed councillors.

“I am happy to take Marcus under my wing if he wants me to.

“If he wants to do his own thing then I will let him.”

Marcus is no stranger to supporting the community, though he won’t have been quite as recognisable.

“I have also been a professional Santa for 20 years,” he explained.

“I’ve helped out at a lot of the local churches and also for the ‘Make A Wish Foundation.’

“Becoming Town Crier is not something I was looking to do but I am more than happy to do it. Anything for a hat!”

Approving Marcus’s appointment Cllr Mike Dodd laughed: “All in favour? Oyez.”
