Town still in running for cup glory

THE league may have gone from Royton Town’s grasp but there is still a chance of cup glory.

And the second string may see silverware or celebrations come to the club as they have a chance of promotion.

Disappointing defeats, 4-1 at local rivals Springhead, 4-1 at Manchester Central and 3-0 at Old Altrinchamians, meant the Manchester League, premier division, title was beyond Town.

With a spokesman for the club describing the performance at Old Alts as ‘poor’, that result meant Royton could not win the league.

“Town never got going on a difficult surface after gifting the home side an early lead they then conceded two late goals,” they added.

After the league had gone on March 23, things did not improve as Royton succumbed to Springhead, with goals from Chris Pauley and Ryan Fagan, as well as a brace from Leighton Stephenson.

And to compound that, they were thumped by the same scoreline at East Manchester at Wright Robinson Sports College in Abbey Hey.

But all is not lost as Royton face Rochdale Sacred Heart in the semi-finals of the Gilgryst Cup on Saturday, April 20 at Oldham Academy North.

And the reserve side is in the thick of the drama as it goes for a top two spot in Division Four of the Manchester League.

It is also a local battle as Heyside Rangers, who play at Crompton House School, are just one win away from being champions after a 2-0 win over Atherton Town ‘A’.

The latest stage of Royton’s quest saw a resounding 5-1 win over Bolton Lads and Girls Club on April 13, with Travis Martin scoring two and Jack Sloan, Lewis Scanlon and Mark Hoppy adding one each.

Now with just three games remaining against Altrincham Hale Reserves, Tintwistle Athletic Reserves, and Moorside Rangers Reserves, they are aiming to overhaul the one-point gap between them and second placed Heywood St James.
